Hi, everyone, welcome to Session Three of MFT’s Summer School series! This time we’re focusing on design and color. Be sure to check it all out at the MFT Blog.
The theory we’re exploring today is Repetition – Repeating visual elements such as line, color, shape, texture, value, or image tends to unify the total effect of a card’s design as well as create rhythm.
I chose to work with some products from the latest release for my project today: BB Polynesian Paradise, BB Polynesian Paradise Die-namics, Pineapple Background, and an older product, MPD Scallops Stencil. The first two are obvious, but the stencil caught my eye when I saw it upside down—it resembles the design on the rind of a pineapple, I think.
I started with a Sweet Tooth card stock base on which a stamped a strip of Pineapple Background by quickly coloring the small images with three colors of my Zig Clean Color Brush Markers, then I huffed and stamped. I was pretty amazed at how well the images transferred and was really happy with the results. Next I trimmed down another piece of Sweet Tooth card stock and dry embossed it with MPD Scallops Stencil, then popped it up on foam mounting tape. The sentiment is from BB Polynesian Paradise and was stamped on Black Licorice card stock with Versamark, heat embossed with white detail embossing powder, and also popped up on foam.
Next I stamped the pineapple from BB Polynesian Paradise on a BB Polynesian Paradise Die-namics, cut from Neenah Classic Crest Cover, Solar White Smooth, 110lb, and stamped with Black Licorice hybrid ink using my MISTI for super-accurate stamping. I colored it with my Zig markers and popped it on foam, as well, then I finished off with enamel dots.
As you can see, not only was the “theme” of the pineapple repeated several times, but repetition is also apparent in the colors and in the texture—both in the colored dimension of the images and in the dry embossing.
I hope you’ve gained a little something from my post today—be sure to check out what the other designers have to show you, too, at the MFT Blog. Thanks for stopping by—see you soon!
